Sound therapy
Sound therapy is an ancient supportive practice that helps boost your mental and physical health and wellbeing. You may have also heard people talk about sound healing or sound bathing. The therapeutic sounds are created using instruments such as singing bowls, gongs, chimes and drums.
It is a gentle yet powerful therapy that works on its own or as a supporting therapy with counselling. It can ease physical tension as well as help you process and sometimes release stored or trapped emotional or traumatic experiences. It can also help some physical and mental health conditions. Most often, it leaves you with a profound sense of peace, even after a treatment as short as 15-20 minutes.

Who is sound therapy for?
Sound therapy is ideal for you if you know you want to receive some sort of support but don’t yet feel up to talking about it. More and more people are turning to alternative wellness practices and holistic therapies. Sound therapy is a beautiful drug-free approach to better health and wellbeing.
Being able to be more relaxed, more emotionally resilient and more able to come to terms with life’s ups and downs are all life skills that can be strengthened through sound therapy.
How does sound therapy work?
The sound vibrations created by the instruments I play can have a powerful effect on our mind and body. Sound therapy can slow down brain waves and gently move our bodies into very relaxed, dream-like states.
I think of it as a way of calming your conscious mind so you can “get out of your own way” and be more open to receive what you need. It can slow our breathing and heart rate and reduce blood pressure and this promotes health. It also reduces our stress hormones and floods our brains with feel-good endorphins.

What you may experience
This is a deeply relaxing and restorative process and it’s like you are listening with your whole body. For some, it feels like unplugging from the usual internal and external stimuli and welcoming a deeper state of consciousness, becoming more aware of what’s happening for them on the inside.
It is not uncommon for someone to fall asleep during sound therapy. For others, they find that easing long-held tensions and mindsets can allow deeper or stronger emotions to bubble up. All of this is OK and you can trust that your body knows what it needs to do. And of course, I am always there to support you whatever you experience.
How can sound therapy help?
Everyone can benefit from sound therapy. It can help with:
-
anxiety
-
depression
-
stress
-
fatigue
-
physical tension
-
emotional blocks and trauma
-
sleep difficulties
-
focus and attention
-
mental clarity
It is also great for helping you get a general “tune-up” for your overall mental and physical wellbeing.

What happens during a sound therapy session?
In a sound therapy session you would lie down in a comfortable setting with your eyes closed, listening to the gentle sounds of musical instruments. I will guide you into the session with a gentle relaxation. I recommend that you wear warm, comfortable clothing.
You may choose to keep some sense of intent or purpose with you during the session, such as wanting to relax or process something, or you may choose to just go with the flow and allow whatever needs to happen to happen.

A sound therapy session is typically around an hour, including some talking at the start and end. Sessions can be shorter if you want to use sound therapy alongside some counselling. This is quite a popular option, particularly for people who are coming for longer-term work.

If you feel that you may want to look a bit more closely about what is happening for you and talk it through, counselling may be a good option for you too.

I have uploaded four sound meditation videos to YouTube so you can click the link to try them out.

You may still have questions about sound therapy. We can have a short, informal chat on the phone so you can find out a bit more about it and ask me and how I work.
